I have always loved travel. Since a child I have always had a wanderlust that has taken me across the world and still does. I feel very lucky that I have been blessed to have a career from my passion for travel. It has been a career that I have enjoyed for over 15 years. During the pandemic I talked to hundreds of fellow disabled travellers and recognised that following the pandemic I had a massive opportunity to not just take my business in a new direction, but that I had an incredible opportunity to create an accessible travel company that not only sold travel but could also have a social impact. I was determined that Wheelie Good Travel Company would be more than just an accessible travel agent, but would be an inspiration for other disabled travellers and that I should be an advocate for changes within the travel and hospitality industry. I chose to do this through my blog articles, podcast Wheelie Good Travel Guide, regular contributions to features on accessible travel in travel industry journals, speaking engagements and working with travel and tourism organisations.

I am a great believer that everyone should be able to enjoy accessible travel and see the world without barriers.

Nothing motivates me more than when a disabled traveller that I have helped is eager to share the experiences of their travels and I see the excitement they have experienced.

I feel very honoured to be a part of the Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 and I hope that I can inspire other disabled people to advocate for the rights of all disabled people and to follow their dreams, just as others in past Disability Power 100s have inspired and continue to inspire me.

For me accessible travel is about recognising each disabled traveller as an individual and finding ways to remove the barriers and obstacles so disabled people can enjoy seeing the world with the same excitement as anyone else.

Q&A

Jonathan Fletcher
My advice is follow your dreams and if someone tells you that you cannot do something, then find your own way of doing and don’t let others deny you opportunities.
I believe it is important to recognise that everyone has the right to enjoy travel and seeing the world whatever their ability level. On one level my work involves working with individual disabled clients and families to enable them to explore the world. On another level I believe it is important and work to educate and raise awareness within the travel industry of the importance of increasing accessibility and the benefits to not just disabled people and their families but also to the travel industry and the folly of those within the travel industry who continue to ignore the importance of the Purple Pound.
It has always been my goal and will always be in the future to advocate for the rights of fellow disabled people to live life to their full potential. In travel I believe it is time the travel and hospitality industry stepped up to the mark and improved accessibility for disabled customers and their families. It is my goal to work with both disabled travellers and the travel industry to achieve greater accessibility in travel.
I think it is important to switch off and relax. The way I switch off is following my local non-league football club Ashton United. I also love researching my family history.
The two partners in my life bring me the greatest joy, that is my partner David and my Canine Partner Assistance Dog, Georgia who also both keep me in check.
Oh definitely dogs.
I want to see more disabled people in decision making and policy making positions.
I think one of the biggest barriers that needs to be addressed is that of the mindset of those who build the barriers that are put in our way.
