Asif’s extensive work with local and central government, social care, health services, the voluntary sector, advocacy, and media has significantly enhanced representation and eliminated barriers for deaf and disabled individuals. His impactful efforts have paved the way for greater inclusivity and accessibility across various domains.
Since 2009, Asif has been the President of the Harrow and Brent United Deaf Club and provides education programmes. In this role, he was instrumental in securing the endorsement of the BDA BSL Charter by Brent Council, Harrow Council, and the Greater London Authority. This endorsement has ensured that deaf people have British Sign Language (BSL) access to Council Services, a monumental step towards inclusivity. Furthermore, Asif has provided deaf awareness training to several public services, including Transport for London, Greater London Authority, University College Hospital London, and local GP practices in Camden, fostering a more informed and accommodating environment for the deaf community. As Chair of the Camden Disability Network, Asif has championed several significant initiatives. He has garnered support from the senior leadership team for the inaugural Disability Charter and the Wellbeing Passport and has actively participated in Disability History Month initiatives. His dedication to promoting diversity extends to his 9 years tenure as an Executive Member of the Camden Black Workers Group, where he supported Black History Month and organised a Diwali event to celebrate and raise awareness of Diwali. Notably, during London Pride Week 2019, Asif played a pivotal role in teaching Camden Council staff to convey the message “We Make Camden Proud” in BSL, highlighting his commitment to intersectional advocacy. In his capacity as Chair of the Hearing Loss Professionals UK Network, Asif has shared his expertise with NHS England and key stakeholders. His influence extends to his role as an Independent Member of the Standard Committee at Westminster City Council and as a Public Appointment Ambassador for the Government Equalities Office. Asif’s participation on various advisory boards for government bodies, including the British Sign Language Board at the Cabinet Office and Chair of the Government Communication Service Subgroup, Disability Employment Advisory Committee, DWP, Disabled Person Transport Advisory Committee, Department for Transport.Asif’s contributions to the arts are equally commendable. As an ambassador for the Harrow Arts Centre, he has worked to promote and enhance access to the arts. His appearances on various TV shows. Asif has been recognised in the Shaw Trust Disability Power List 100 in both 2018 and 2021 and was named one of the top 10 most influential disabled people in public service by Disability News.
